"Travel gets into your blood and you just keep traveling" the words of the song could apply to Joy Guthrie. That is until she met an Australian who became the man of her dreams. Now Joy and Brent Reichenbach are married and have hung up their hiking boots after honeymooning in Cuba and Jamaica. They began the ultimate adventure-settling down and raising a family in Barberton. She then met the "cool" Aussie teacher, Brent Reichenbach who hailed from Melbourne Australia. Their friendship flourished and they decided to complete an overland trip from London to South Africa. It was one of the last goals Joy and set before settling down in South Africa. It was an adventure-filled trip that took them eights months from the time they started in Spanish North Africa. From the heat of the Sahara to the sweltering rain forests of West Africa, the couple and companions traveled through 22 countries including Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Chad, Sudan, Ethiopia, and then down the east coast of Africa to Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania before reaching South Africa. They became engaged at one of "world's romantic spots"- Lake Navaisha not far from where Joy Adamson of "Born Free" had lived. Most of the friends over the past months were all going their various ways from Nairobi so it was also the ideal place for the engagement party. After arriving in SA, Brent returned to Australia for a year to work and save so that he could emigrate to SA. A year later (2001) they were married on the banks of the crocodile overlooking the Kruger Park on the farm Restawyle belonging to family friends. Some 180 relatives and friends from all over the world attended the wedding to see the two tie the knot"”. Brent teaches in Nelspruit at "Nelspruit Primary School" and Joy works as a Mobile Community Clinic Sister in the Barberton rural district. |
